Shimmering Star Spotlight: Mercedes Lomelino

This month’s Shimmering Star isn’t afraid to dream crazy big! You know her best as the M in GEM Sisters – the fabulous Mercedes Lomelino!

Fans of Mercedes already know that she shines bright, making comedy fabulous every week in sketches and challenges on GEM Sisters, the ever-growing and always funny YouTube Channel she shares with her sisters. She also dreams of becoming an actress, which is why landing a guest-starring role on Nickelodeon’s sketch comedy series, All That meant so much to her! It was the first time she was able to show off her acting and comedy talents together on a tv series, experiencing what it was like to work on a real set alongside a director and a big cast.

Being able to live her dream every day is amazing for Mercedes, but it’s also important to her to be a good role model for her fans. She knows the importance of helping others and lends her time to causes that help empower girls to follow their dreams. GEM Sisters will be appearing at the Say No To Bullying Festival in Los Angeles on October 5th, where they’ll be doing a meet and greet and building awareness for bullying prevention. They have also partnered with the Ad Council for their SheCanSTEM Summit in Hollywood, and will be leading a panel about making slime!

Get to know Mercedes as she dishes on her All That experience, the things that make her laugh, and why she believes that girls have the right to be fabulous, funny, and weird!

Tell us a little bit about YOU!

MERCEDES LOMELINO: My favorite things to do are going shopping, baking, hanging out with friends and family. I love laughing! Plus arts & crafts, really I’m up for anything!

You recently spent a few days filming skits for All That on Nickelodeon. Tell us a little bit about your experience!

MERCEDES: It was so much fun! I was surrounded by such great, talented people. What’s even better is that I made new friends. The cast was all so nice! Everyone had a great sense of humor and we laughed so much between takes. The director let me add some of my own ideas at times to help make the jokes as funny as possible. It was awesome!

Some of your skits are with legacy cast member, Alisa Reyes. What was it like getting to film alongside Alisa? Did she share any advice with you?

MERCEDES: Alisa shared great advice since it was my first time being on a show. She said “Just go for it. Don’t be scared, you got this!”

What is something that ALWAYS makes you laugh?

MERCEDES: Funny faces! Even if a joke is only a little bit funny, if you can make the right face with the joke I will die laughing.

How do you shine bright?

MERCEDES: I shine bright is by showing the world that you can be beautiful, weird, and funny at the same time. You don’t have to be just one thing. That’s my message #fabulousandfunnyandweird, PERIOD!

The women who inspire me are…

MERCEDES: J.Lo! She is Latina just like me and she does everything. I want to do EVERYTHING!

I am also inspired by Ariana Grande because bad things have happened to her but she came back better than ever!

I am most passionate about…

MERCEDES: I love being funny a lot. But mostly I really like meeting GEMS (which is what we call our fans). It just makes me feel so happy! I get to encourage them to be brave and to be themselves no matter what.

I feel most confident when…

MERCEDES: I’m performing! Entertaining people is the best feeling in the world to me.

My biggest dream is…

MERCEDES: To be known as a famous and fabulous comedian. I really want to people to know me as a talented and hard-working actress/singer/model.

The advice I want to share with other girls…

MERCEDES: Go for your dreams! If you want to play games for a living, or be a professional model, or be an actress or comedian, don’t let anyone stop you. You will need to work hard, but if you want it you should go get it. The sooner you start the better! I am so glad my parents support my dreams.

You can catch Mercedes’ All That sketches airing over the next few months on Nickelodeon. The girls will also be making an appearance on the GoldieBlox YouTube Channel, starring in a special Halloween sketch on October 16th. It’s never been a better time to be a GEM!
