Author Daka Hermon Shares 6 Spooky Facts About Hide and Seeker:

FACT #1:

When I started writing this novel, I thought it was going to be an Action Adventure/Mystery, like The Goonies. Somehow it became a horror novel, which is surprising since I’m a big scaredy-cat. The cover of Hide and Seeker even scared me the first time I saw it!

FACT #2:

Hide and Seek was one of my favorite games when I was a kid. When I visited my grandma, all the neighborhood kids would meet near her house to play. She had a great front yard with the perfect trees for home base. We’d play until it was dark. Then we’d run around catching lightning bugs until our parents made us come inside.

FACT #3:

The chant used in Hide and Seeker is the same chant we used to start the game when I was a kid. (I went up the hill, the hill was muddy, stomped my toe and made it bloody. Should I wash it?) I have no idea where the chant originated. No one does, which makes it even more creepy. It was this chant that gave me the idea to write the novel.

FACT #4:

Several of the kids in the book are named after friends or family members. I have a younger sister named Shae, but she is not at all like the character in Hide and Seeker.

FACT #5:

I love ice cream trucks! I get excited when I see them and hear the music, even though some are little scary. I have a toy collection that now includes ice cream truck toys.

FACT #6:

I include a little of my personality in all of my characters, but I’m probably most like Justin. He has to deal with some pretty heavy issues — grief and death. My mom died of cancer, too, though I wasn’t as young as Justin. No matter how much time passes, the sadness still remains. Like Justin, I had some great friends that uplifted and supported me. I hope everyone who reads this story understands that it’s okay to not be okay and recognizes the value in real friendships.
