Getting Crafty with Two Fabulous Seedling DIY Kits

Our friends at Seedling are always sending us their latest products, and we couldn’t be more grateful. You’ve heard us gush about everything from DIY Virtual Reality Headsets to their Design Your Own Disney Kits and everything in between. This time around they were kind enough to share two of their most popular kits – Design Your Own Sunnies and Make Your Own Rope Bangles.

Since we’re always DIYing our craft kits exactly as the instructions tell us to, we decided to challenge ourselves to try something different this time around. Both the Sunnies and Rope Bangle Kits are perfect DIYs to last you all Spring and Summer long, so we crafted two perfect warm weather inspired items that you guys can try on your own.

So what did we do? We’re admittedly not that crafty, so we didn’t want to do anything that was too hard and we wanted to make sure to share the best of both products with you guys so you could really get a feel for the kits. That’s when it hit us – what if we combined a few items from each kit together to make two ultimate DIY projects?

That’s how we came up with these awesome Thread Wrapped Sunnies and Backpack Wish Lanyard! We’ll explain what we did, but first, let us show you what each of these Seedling kits comes with so you know what you’re working with.

Pretty sweet. Okay, so obviously from here you could just start braiding some killer bracelets or creating some totally fab sunnies and both would come out totally swoon-worthy. But since we challenged ourselves to think outside the box a little, here’s what we did.

The sunnies were calling our name, so we started there. We just love how they have a fun retro vibe, and TBH you could just wear these babies out without even doing anything to them. They’re legit adorable. But, since that wouldn’t be any fun, we got to designing. The Design Your Own Sunnies kit features nail polish as a way to add color, and that really spoke to us. But we’re glitter-fiends, so we wanted to step things up a notch. We’ve done other glitter projects before, but rolling things in glitter is kind of a mess, so we stuck to the nail polish idea.

We grabbed a black and white glitter nail polish we had lying around from the Skeleton Key Necklace DIY we did, and knew it would be the perfect fit for our sunnies.

While the nail polish was drying (thankfully it doesn’t take too long), we started thinking about the Make Your Own Rope Bangles kit. What should we do with these that isn’t just a bracelet? There’s lots of suggestions for braids and knots to try, but we really loved the 4 Strand Braid. It’s pretty and it really takes ordinary braids to the next level. Instead of a bangle, we decided to create a Backpack Wish Lanyard.

What’s a Wish Lanyard? It’s a take on a Wish Bracelet – a bracelet that’s usually made of thin string, thread, or hemp. When you first put it on, you make a wish. You wear it non-stop until it eventually frays and falls off. Once your bracelet falls off, your wish comes true!

We thought that was fun, but we also didn’t want to say goodbye to our lanyard, so we decided to stick on the rhinestones that came in the Design Your Own Sunnies Kit. That way, you can make a wish and when all the rhinestones fall off, your wish will come true – and you’ll still have an awesome lanyard left over. We chose to use all 3 rope colors that came in the kit – pink, white, and green because they were super bright and perfect for both Spring and Summer.

Now, back to the sunnies! Since we used the rhinestones from the Sunnies Kit on the lanyard, we thought we should use something from the Bangles Kit on our sunnies. So we picked the bright green embroidery thread and got to wrapping the arms of our sunnies. The bright color really popped next to the black and white glitter polish we used, and we think they came out great. They’re a little bit retro, a little bit modern, and definitely give off Summer vibes.

Tip: We found that adding a little Mod Podge (glue works too – just don’t be globby about it!) to the arms of the sunnies helped the thread stay in place better.

We had a blast creating these two projects and we think you guys will love these Seedling kits. Whether you follow along with what you’re given in the kit or get crafty with things you have around the house, we know your sunnies, bangles, and any other DIY projects will totally shine!
