She’s excited for a fresh start, a way to finally make friends, find her place, and prove her worth out on the water. There’s more to Jack than it seems. Sure, he’s always down to break the rules and take big, sometimes dangerous risks (like accidentally causing a fire), but he has layers, and he’s more than the guy with a chip on his shoulder we meet at the beginning of the story.

When tapped for a secret society his entire family is a part of, Jack is eager to complete the gambits and get in to gain access to the secrets his family has been keeping and feel like finally belongs. But Jack knows more than he realizes just by being a Hunt and being brought up in a world where puzzles protect everything.
