THE INCORRUPTIBLES: Meet the Thistle Squad

“You will choose your squad. Know that your squad is your lifeline. They’re the only thing keeping you safe out in the field.”

Set in a future where powerful sorcerers rule over the humans, The Incorruptibles by Lauren Magaziner is all about joining the resistance, fighting back against evil, and becoming the person you were destined to be. And after an encounter with The Radiance (the most dangerous sorcerers), Fiora Barrowling’s life is about to change forever.

Fiora is an apprentice in her uncle’s tailor shop, having lost her parents to a sorcerer’s attack and become an orphan. After an encounter with The Radiance where she uses one of their lightning blasters against them to protect herself and her uncle, Fiora will have to choose between the quiet life she knows and joining the resistance and training to be an Incorruptible.

From the very first page where we meet Fiora to getting whisked away to Inc Academy, a school Fiora wasn’t even sure was real until the moment she arrives, you’ll be captivated. Fiora is allowed to stay at the school, despite her unconventional arrival, but she only has sixty days to prove herself or risk being thrown out. Inc Academy is broken down into a bunch of different flower-themed squads, including the earnest and supportive Buttercups, the lucky and ever-prepared Clovers, and the fearless and everlasting Thistles.

Eager to feel valued and prove herself worthy of her place at Inc Academy, Fiora selects the Thistle Squad, a team of fearless close-range fighters. She’ll train for combat under Captain Quinn alongside Mel, Onyx, and Cameron. You’ll have to read it to see how things go down, but with danger looming and a sorcer spy having infiltrated the academy and being the mysterious newcomer, we can say that Fiora’s fight to prove herself will be anything but easy as fingers point in her direction, and the odds are stacked against her.

The Incorruptibles author Lauren Magaziner is sneaking you into Inc Academy and spilling secrets about the Thistles. (But with a sorcerer spy lurking among us, nothing is safe, so keep this info confidential!)

Meet the Thistles from THE INCORRUPTIBLES:

Fiora has hated sorcerers ever since they killed her parents. Also, sorcerers rule over her town, and Fiora has seen firsthand how egotistical and entitled they can be. Letting loose a lifetime of pent-up frustration, Fiora doesn’t mean to defy the sorcerers… But she does, not realizing she’s standing up to two of the most powerful ones in the realm (oops). Now Fiora is in mortal peril—and on the run. Her only hope of survival is to train to become an Incorruptible, a resistance fighter that uses tech against the sorcerers’ magic.

Fiora is fierce, tenacious, eager to prove herself, and always abides by her strong moral compass. And she’s desperately looking for the sorcerer spy inside Inc Academy. Can she even trust her fellow Thistles?

Mel is a cranky, arrogant brat—a walking, talking superiority complex. Fiora would sooner be friends with a mosquito, and Mel loathes Fiora just as much. But Mel being (annoyingly) talented and athletic makes her the perfect academic rival for anyone who wants to rise to the top. Mel isn’t at Inc Academy to help her classmates improve, though. If they can’t keep up, that’s their problem. All Mel wants is to get out on the field and kick some sorcerer butt.

But why would Mel—who’s ranked top of the class—be so threatened by Fiora’s presence at the academy? What makes Mel so irritable and insecure?

No one has a bigger heart than Cameron. He’s optimistic, enthusiastic, and kind to the core. He’s not the most talented sorcerer fighter (the bottom ranked Junior Inc in their class year), but he certainly tries the hardest. And—as Cameron would constantly tell you—he seems to be the only one actually absorbing Captain Quinn’s lessons about teamwork. Cameron is all in on squad unity… if only his teammates would listen.

Does the thick, prominent scar on his face—from his eye to his chin—imply a fraught history with sorcerers? Or could Cameron possibly be the sorcerer spy?

Awkward, contemplative, and always with his nose in a book, Onyx is the resident strategist for the Thistles. While he’s not the most athletic, Onyx is definitely the trickiest opponent, thanks to his logical thinking. However, even though Onyx is smart, he studies… a lot. Natural intelligence is a dime a dozen, but learnedness from education? Now that is worth something. And Onyx is determined to come up with tactics that will work for a five-person team, now Fiora’s here.

Fiora is fascinated with Onyx’s collection of books, which were banned in her hometown. But why is Onyx so possessive over them? Normal book-owner behavior, or is there something in the pages he’s trying to hide?

*Not pictured here, due to being sent away on a midnight mission with her old Bluebells squadmate (and current Buttercup captain) June.*

Captain Quinn leads the Thistles with a cool, aloof air. She keeps her past a bit of mystery… mostly because she does not want to talk about what happened with her childhood team, the Bluebells. Do not ask her what happened. Although Quinn cares deeply about the squad she’s leading, her compliments are rare. It’s easier for Quinn to keep her composure when teaching with a nonchalant attitude. And low-key: she’s the best fighter Fiora has ever seen. It’s always jaw-dropping to watch Quinn in action.

What does Quinn think about the sorcerer who has infiltrated Inc Academy? Well, she has many smart theories that she would never share with her pupils. But Fiora is keen to eavesdrop. ☺
