The Only Girl in School

We actually mentioned “The Only Girl in School” by Natalie Standiford once before, on our list of Awesome Reads for 2016, and now that it’s finally released, we wanted to remind everyone to grab a copy. It’s our YAYREADS Pick of the Week!

In “The Only Girl in School”, fifth grader Claire Warren’s best friend Bess moves away, leaving her as the only girl left in her school. While there are definitely some perks, like having the entire girl’s bathroom to herself, there’s definitely some downfalls as well – like, well, being the only girl in a school full of boys who can’t seem to leave her alone.

The Only Girl in School
With Bess gone, Claire looks to her other close friend, Henry, but he’s suddenly ignoring her and acting like he’s “too cool” to spend time with her, and Claire is forced to navigate the fifth grade all alone. The good news? Claire is extremely confident in herself and continuously proves herself to be just as good at most things than the boys in her class. Even when she gets knocked down, she picks herself up with humor and resilience. Claire Warren completely kicks butt, no matter how many people try to sabotage her boat, bully her at lunch, or try to take her down in a game of dodgeball.

The story is told in a really cute and unique way, through letters and drawings that Claire sends to Bess throughout her 5th grade school year.

“The Only Girl in School” is an absolute must-read for girls of any age. Claire’s girl power is infectious and will hopefully fill you with the idea that you too can take on any challenge that comes your way.
