DIY Ribbon Organizer – Lazy Crafternoon

“Lazy Crafternoon” by Stella Fields is the latest in the “C.I.Y. (Craft It Yourself)” series from our BFFs at Capstone. (Thanks for sending us a copy, BTW!) Instead of just telling you guys about this fabulous book filled to the brim with easy to make crafts, we figured we’d SHOW you one, too! But first – here’s some info on the book!

“Lazy Crafternoon” has over 50 fun craft ideas that are pretty simple to make require only a few supplies. In most cases, a lot of the supplies you need for the crafts are things you may already have in your house if you’re a DIY-addict (washi tape, hot glue gun, Sharpies, etc), which means not only can you make something that looks awesome, you can also make it without blowing your entire allowance. Yay!

From some pretty school supplies to room decorations to accessories, you’ll find pretty much anything worth making within the pages of this book, including some great crafts to make together with your friends at a sleepover or just whenever you’re all sitting around bored trying to figure out what to do. (We particularly loved the Ribbon Chandelier, Yarn Wrapped Jars, and all the many projects that use Washi Tape.) Whether your afternoon is sunny, rainy, or otherwise lame, you can always be sure that it will be CRAFTY with this great book!

Since it’s back to school season, we were inspired by the Ribbon Organizer craft found in the book. The “Lazy Crafternoon” version is larger (16×20 sized frame), great for hanging on the wall of your bedroom, so we decided to add our own little twist by making locker and desk sized organizers instead! For our frames, we tried an 8×10 and a 5×7, both of which are easy to find at any dollar store, craft store, or even a place like Target. The 5×7 frame should fit in most average sized lockers, and the 8×10 is good for sitting on your desk or study area.

The “Lazy Crafternoon” organizer uses a solid color spray paint as well as spray painted thumbtacks in order to add a splash of color, it’s super chic and cute. Since we’re crazy for glitter, we used glitter spray paint on ours AND we decided to swap out the regular thumbtacks for fun shaped ones. Yay hearts and flowers. The great thing about this craft (and any craft, really) is that it’s really easy to customize and make your own. You can choose colors that match your room, your locker accessories, or even your mood. If you’re making the smaller frame to hang in your locker, don’t forget to add magnets to the back so that you can hang it up. We used four square magnets with adhesive backs, making it really easy to add them to the frame.

Here’s a tip: The book says to use the cardboard that comes inside the picture frame as the base for your organizer (the thing you’ll wrap your colored fabric and ribbons around), but some frames (like the ones we used) don’t come with one. Don’t fret, your project isn’t ruined! You can grab a piece of recycled cardboard, foam board, or even corkboard and cut it down to the size you need. It only adds one extra step, so it’s not really a big deal.

“Lazy Crafternoon” is now available, so grab a copy, gather up some supplies, and get crafting! For more craft ideas, click here!
