Author Megan Brennan Shares 5 Fun Facts About Magic Girls: Kira and the (Maybe) Space Princess:

Introducing Neo-Earth:

Kira lives on a planet called Neo-Earth. It’s kind of like our earth, but there are a lot more people who are at least a little magical. I like to think of it as a world where any original character I come up with could somehow fit in. An alien? A magical girl? A merman? They could all easily attend Neo-Earth Junior High and fit in. There are also a lot of “normal” kids there too, like Kira!

Tricky Birthdays:

Because Catacorn’s birthday is based on an intergalactic calendar from many light-years away from Neo-Earth, it’s hard to figure out how to convert that day to Neo-Earth calendars! I think eventually she might pick the day she landed in Kira’s yard as her Neo-Earth birthday, but I can’t be sure. Maybe she will pick a new one every year.

Catacorn’s Evolution:

I originally drew Catacorn years ago, when I was in art school, for a little one-page joke of a comic. But in this original form, she was just a strange stray animal that a girl found in her backyard. Her weird face was so fun to draw that I kept bringing her back! She slowly became a whole middle-schooler instead of a feral animal. Congratulations to her!

Accidental Lefties:

There are a higher percentage of lefties on Neo-Earth than on our Earth. This is definitely not because I kept making them lefties by pure accident. Have you ever tried to draw a picture of yourself drawing? If you’re like me, you will draw yourself as if you’re in a mirror without even trying.

Sparkle Energy:

Kira and Catacorn use Sparkle Energy to power their magical moves. I think of sparkle energy as if the feeling you get when you’re really excited about something could become a physical thing. I guess on Neo-Earth this happens for real, whereas on our Earth we could only imagine it happening. I feel like being excited about things and being around people I like really does give me the power to do things!
