The Isle of the Lost
by Melissa de la Cruz
We’re all pretty much living and breathing Descendants love these days, so why not read the book?!
The Isle of the Lost is actually the prequel to the Descendants movie, and it follows the lives of Mal, Evie, Carlos, and Jay before their trip to Auradon Prep. It’s an awesome way to learn more about your favorite characters, and the dreary place they were raised. Fingers crossed for a full on Descendants book series!
(Series) – by Jason Segel
If you’re into spooky stories, Nightmares! is definitely for you!
Charlie Laird has a few problems – he just moved into a purple mansion in the creepiest part of town, his dad just married a woman he’s pretty sure is a witch, and he can’t sleep without having horrible nightmares. Charlie’s problems start to get even worse when his nightmares enter the waking world. Charlie must face his fears in order to end these nightmares once and for all, but is he brave enough? Nightmares! isn’t just a spooky read, it’s completely charming and totally funny. Charlie’s adventures will continue when the next book in the series, Nightmares! A Snicker of Magic
– by Natalie Lloyd
Fans of magic and mystery will love the whimsical adventure that is A Snicker of Magic!
The story takes place in Midnight Gulch, a used-to-be magical town where people would sing up thunderstorms and dance up sunflowers. When the town became cursed, the magic disappeared. When 12 year old Felicity moves there with her mother, who is cursed with a wandering heart, she tries to figure out how to bring back the magic. See, Felicity is a “word collector”, which means she sees words everywhere, kind of like an aura glowing around everything she looks at. For the first time in her life, she sees the word “home” when she looks around Midnight Gulch, and even more heart-skippy stoppy words around Jonah, a boy she meets along the way. Can Felicity break the spell to cure her mother’s heart AND bring the magic back to the town?
The League of Beastly Dreadfuls
(Series) – by Holly Grant
If you’re as into quirky, witty, mysterious books like Coraline or pretty much anything by Roald Dahl, you’ll totally love The League of Beastly Dreadfuls.
The story follows Anastasia, your completely average 11 year old girl who’s parents die in a tragic vacuum-cleaner accident. She’s rescued by her two long lost great-aunts who bring her to their totally creepy, “authentic” Victorian home that turns out to be an asylum for the criminally insane. At the asylum, Anastasia can tell things aren’t quite what they seem, so when she meets brothers Ollie and Quentin, they work together to plot their escape! This is Book 1 in the series, so if you like it, you’ll have more books to look forward to!
Which Way, Dude?
(Adventure Time Series) – by Max Braillier and Tracey West
What time is it?! It’s READING TIME! The Which Way, Dude? series aren’t your ordinary books. They’re based on the Choose Your Own Adventure format, which means YOU get to choose how the story plays out!
Unlike the boring old way where all you need to do is make a choice, these Which Way, Dude? books use puzzles, codes, and riddles that you’ll need to solve in order to continue the story. They’re totally mathematical! There’s 3 books so far, each based on a different Adventure Time character. Book 1 is about BMO, Book 2 is about Jake, and Book 3 is about LSP! If we hope hard enough, can we get about Gunter?
(Series) – by Malie Meloy
The Apothecary trilogy are great reads for true bookworms. They’re a little more of an involved read than the other suggestions on this list, but absolutely worth every single page!
In Book 1, fourteen year old Janie moves from LA to London and meets a mysterious apothecary and his son, Benjamin, who dreams of being a spy. When Benjamin’s dad is kidnapped, Janie and Benjamin must work together to uncover the secrets of his dad’s sacred book, the Pharmacopoeia, in order to find him. The book is really special, so of course there are a bunch of Russian spies who are trying to steal it and use it for not-so good things. Not only do Janie and Benjamin need to keep the Pharmacopoeia away from the enemy, they need to learn to mix potions they never even knew were possible! We promise book 2 and 3 are just as exciting and full of wonder as the first.
