As Told By Ginger is Coming Back to Nickelodeon

As Told By Ginger has been off the air for 12 years, but Ginger Foutley and the gang have never left our hearts. So this morning when it was announced that As Told By Ginger would be getting all new episodes in 2017, we kind of lost our minds a bit.

If you’ve never seen As Told By Ginger, the show revolves around Ginger Foutley and her best friends Darren, Dodie, and Macie as they try to survive Middle School and prove themselves to the school as more than just outcasts and nerds. The show aired for 3 seasons from 2000-2003, but despite it’s short run, it always managed to stand out from other cartoons. As Told By Ginger was never afraid to tackle the important issues of pre-teen life, like self-esteem, depression, bra-stuffing, breakups, and even death.

So who is Ginger Foutley, and why should you care that her and her diary are headed back to Nickelodeon? Here’s a little glimpse into Ginger’s world.

As Told By Ginger
Ginger is an excellent student and a self-proclaimed “science geek” who is also great at writing poetry. She’s not really interested in being popular, but as a writer, is looking for new experiences and seeing how “the other half” lives.

As Told By Ginger
Darren is Ginger’s friend and neighbor who isn’t really much of a nerd at all. He’s sporty and pretty cool, but due to his orthidontic headgear, everyone overlooks him and labels him a nerd.

Dodie is always up on the latest happenings and gossip of the cool girls and wants nothing more than to be cool. Sometimes she can take things too far by pulling elaborate schemes to get herself in with the popular group and cheerleading squad.

Macie is a loveable mess. She’s allergic to pretty much everything and is constantly filled with anxiety. She’s a bit immature at times, but she means well. She’s a sweet girl and is extremely smart and knowledgable about most topics. She also has some of the best one-liners on the entire show.

As Told By Ginger
When Courtney, the resident middle school ~cool rich girl~ takes a liking to Ginger, she starts getting invited to hang out with her and her popular friends, who don’t see Ginger as anything but a geek. As Ginger learns more about who she is and the world around her, she writes it all down in her diary. As if dealing with  middle school and mean girls isn’t enough, Ginger’s little brother Carl is always trying to rope her in to his weird experiments and pranks. But no matter what happens to her and her friends, Ginger’s mom, Lois, is always there to give great advice. She’s basically on par with Topanga from Girl Meets World in terms of giving great mom advice. (but with much more Spandex)

One of the coolest things about As Told By Ginger was the fashion. In most cartoons, characters always wear the same outfit in every episode, as it’s much easier for the artists and animators that work on the show, but on As Told By Ginger, the outfits changed all the time, like real life. You’d even see the characters re-wear things sometimes, like we do in real life when we have a favorite shirt or finally get around to doing the laundry. Pretty cool.

New episodes of As Told By Ginger are set to begin airing in 2017, and are supposedly going to pick up where the series left off. Now that nerds basically rule the world in real life, it’ll be really interesting to see what’s become of Ginger, Macie, Dodie, and Darren when the show comes back next year. While you wait, you can catch episodes of As Told By Ginger on TeenNick’s “The Splat” and it’s basically crucial that you learn all the words to the Little Seal Girl theme song. Because really, we’re all just little seal girls living in the real world.
